Atlantic Canada doesn't get the attention it deserves from travelers. It takes a little extra effort to get there. One must drive past the lovely Maine coast or hop a flight or a ferry to reach the Canadian provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland. However, it's worth the effort. Also worth the effort is planning ahead to time the seasons and the transportation links to take advantage of the scenery, the history, the recreational opportunities, and the Canadians themselves, who have always been good hosts to this reviewer."Fodor's Nova Scotia & Atlantic Canada" provides a concise planning resource and compact travel guide. There is a nice introduction to the region, followed by chapters on each of the individual provinces. The chapters hit the highlights in terms of things to see, where to stay and what to eat, including some sample itineraries. The narrative takes note of the distinctive ethnic treasures to be found, whether the Scottish traditions of Cape Breton, or the Acadian traditions of New Brunswick. And who could miss "Anne of Green Gables" land in PEI? The text includes some decent sketch maps and diagrams, and there are plenty of web addresses for further research. The concluding chapter has some travel practicalities. This reviewer wishes there were more photographs included. This guide is best recommended to first time visitors looking for the basics.
I think any travel book which tries to cover a location, state, city, province -- has an enormous burden, probably impossible to please every person. This particular book is a neatly organized and presented description of what my wife and I found in Atlantic Canada. We used the book as an aid to our trip and found it valuable. It is, of course, composed mostly of very short descriptions, maps, bits of history, etc. Would we buy it again were we to lose our present copy and plan on returning to that area? Yes.
I bought it specifically for Nova Scotia and there is much more to do in the areas than what is mentioned for most areas. Use Trip Advisor to plan your trip. The book even misled me that the Cabot Trail is possible to be done in one day. That is pushing it without stops and you have to stop and admire. Not sure if I will bother to use when I go to Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland
This book gives a good overview, some dining and lodging suggestions but has too few maps, especially city maps. Very good introduction to Atlantic Canada overall, with descriptions of various locals, which helps to prioritize travel plans.
Nicely divided into areas. Easy to follow. Has pretty good maps. Would like more choices of hotels/restaurants...they do refer you to a website for more of that information. This plus on line research and tourist info from Canada has given me all I need to plan our 2 week trip.
A lot of information but hard to read. It's like reading a novel. I was hoping for either personal reviews or highlighted must-sees.
As usual for fodor's, it is complete and helpful. Lots of good information and travel tips to fit the itinerary.
Love all of Fodor's travel guides and as expected, really have found the Maritime Islands guides excellent.
