This is not a glossy guide with lots of colour pictures, but it is a well-designed and laid out guide, with colour used primarily in the introductory section. If you're going to really nail a small area, like say a metro city or even a small town, it seems to me that your best bet is probably the internet and something like Tripadvisor. But if you are going to tour a big area, like say the coast of California, or France, a book like this is great for getting yourself oriented. You can run through the whole trip, pick up on odd locations between obvious stops, and get a sense of where you need to focus your trip searches. And I've never found a guidebook that sends you anywhere but the most obvious and pricey lodging options, so that's an internet topic for sure.All of that said, then, the Lonely Planet "Coastal California" books, (any current edition), are just right for giving you an overall sense of top destinations and a reasonable taste of what you might encounter along the way. Viewed that way, this is a fine choice, especially if you like its slight bit of chatty edge compared to more staid guidebooks.Because it covers so much territory you don't get a lot of detail on any single destination, but my sense was that it offered a fair sense of what your traveling options and choices will be.
