Review

“Speed has always been a critical element in the product designprocess. But, as Preston Smith points out, one must be extraordinarilyflexible as well in one's development and innovationprocesses. In the light-speed world we live in today, as Smith sopoignantly points out, one's ability to use intelligent, knowledgebased flexibility is an imperative to winning each day, every day.”—Michael D. Thieneman, executive vice president and chief technologyofficer, Whirlpool Corporation “Preston's previous book, Developing Products in Half the Time, waschock-full of time-to-market gems. This one goes further, showingtime-to-market in a new light and providing even more wisdomthat's right on for today.”—Chuck Blevins, director, Office of Program Management,LifeScan, Inc. (Johnson & Johnson) “Preston provides exceptionally detailed treatment of techniquesto help any Program Manager lead difficult, constantly changingprojects. His many examples show how these tools work in thereal world.”—Jim Callahan, senior program manager, C-Cor “This book addresses what's concerned me lately: how to makeproduct development more effective and quicker. It emphasizesthat Project Leaders should manage decisions and risk ratherthan tasks and processes, because decisions are what really drivethe project.”—James Joseph Snyder, product development manager,Medtronic, Inc.

Preston has taken an interesting approach to helping product development professionals to do their job better. The experiences of the software development world are brought to bear on the processes of building new products that don't lend them completely to the concepts of agility. However, his treatise is that we can bring some agility to the process and produce better products faster by understanding the philosophies of agility. If you are in the business, you definitely need to read this book and take its message to heart.

Some very nicely written arguments for agile methods, but not much new that I might use.

This is the second edition of an important book in the Product Development literature. The first edition of Flexible Product Development was published in 2007 as a hardback. This expanded and updated edition is a paperback and comes at a much reduced price. The book addresses the questions whether Agile software development practices can be applied to development of physical products, what benefits could accrue from this, and how such a change in product development practices could be executed. Not surprisingly, the author's answer to the first question is a qualified 'Yes': some Agile practices can be applied beneficially to some parts of product development projects. The first chapter describes Agile practices and outlines the issues to be addressed when applying these to physical product development. Each of the next eight chapters examines an aspect of product development - from customers and requirements through product architecture, team dynamics, project management and governance processes, among others. The tenth chapter addresses organizational change management for introduction of flexible product development processes. The eleventh chapter, new to this edition, advances a methodology for proactive change management within a development project. As an experienced product development practitioner, I found this new edition very interesting. I particularly liked the logical and data-driven approaches that Preston Smith has adopted. He presents data and logical arguments to support his conclusions and recommendations about each of the product development practices discussed. He does not over-sell the methods he advocates and points out drawbacks and limitations. In particular, this book is free of the ideological and ritualistic elements that make me suspicious of full-bore Agile adoption and even more so its cousin Lean management. This book is free of story-boards, scrums, scrum-masters, chief engineers, gemba walks, kaizens, green belts, black belts, A3 reports and all the other cargo cult aspects of these systems. To be clear, the beneficial practices are all discussed, but in data-driven and jargon-free terms. This is clearly a guidebook. It gives the reader a good idea about the landscape, places to visit and places to avoid. Each reader will still need to decide whether this is where they want to go, plan their own itinerary and actually embark on the journey.I recommend this book thoroughly to anyone interested in new product development. Leaders in R&D departments and product management may want to give this book to their entire teams, and the pricing certainly facilitates this. It would also be interesting supplemental reading for engineering and marketing students taking relevant courses.Disclosure: I received a copy of the book at reduced cost in exchange for committing to write an honest review, which I have posted above.

As a designer/developer/manager for high volume consumer Integrated Circuit products, I know that there is a very strong need for books and information on this topic. Times have changed since I started this career; and now the typical customer demands very short development times. Worse, the customers often don't know all the details of what they want until they get the product and try it out. Thus, modern product development requires Flexible Development simply to get revenue and be profitable. After reading this book's Prefaces and Intro and 1st Chapter I was very excited about reading the rest of the book. Maybe the author had the answers!Alas, this is a very difficult problem in general. Clearly, the whole Agile methodology for software projects has made great strides in addressing these problems. I am convinced that is one of the reasons for the wild successes of software-centric companies. But, for hardware companies this is a much more difficult; and for integrated circuit development it seems nearly impossible. (The million-dollar cost for each IC Tape-Out makes it very hard to make rapid releases; and makes it downright dangerous to "fail fast" and "fail often".) IC development is really in the "dark ages" of waterfall schedules and massive specifications and endless verification and reviews. How do we get Agile in IC development ?Unfortunately, the book doesn't give THE answer to this; which is not surprising given that it seems impossible. However, the book does provide a lot of insights into what aspects could be improved, even if the whole development cannot be Agile. The book also provides a wide variety of tools for managers to investigate. (It doesn't dive deeply into any single tool, but rather provides an overview of alternative ways that one might build more flexibility into the project. In summary, this is definitely not the final book on this near-impossible topic. But, it was an interesting and applicable read, and hopefully my management skills have improved as a result.
