She lives in Washington state with her rad girlfriend, a bunch of children, and way too many animals. I pre-ordered this book a while back. To be honest, Nina Packebush is a old and dear friend of mine. And I wanted to support her writing career.With that said, you should know that I am just a average middle aged guy. Who normally reads exactly what you might expect someone like myself to read. Lame adventure fiction, sci-fi, horror, technical manuals, etc.But I just devoured this book in two days. It was that good. Nina Packebush's writing and characters are universally approachable by just about anyone. The characters will suck you in and make feel something. The story will make you reflect upon your own life, and the people who make up that life.There's a lot to take away from Girls Like Me. For me, though, this story is about family. Whatever kind of family you have. But family nonetheless. Often heart wrenching and real. Also uplifting and comforting.
I just finished reading this book and am at a loss for words. This book is revolutionary! Being a queer teen mom, reading this book was moving, to say the least. It's a struggle to be different--to be an outcast. When you fall on the outskirts of society's pressured norms, you end up feeling really alone. I am a major bookworm and find it really special when I can relate to a story in a way that makes me feel less alone in my experiences. With that being said, this is the first book that has applied to that particular area of my life. I so, so wish that I could have gotten my hands on a copy of this book four years ago when I was pregnant. However, I am overjoyed that queer teens and teen moms and queer teen moms will have this book to comfort them. Girls Like Me was diverse, in terms of race, gender, sexual orientation, mental health, social class, and so much more. I appreciate Nina Packebush for telling a story that has desperately needed to be told. This is a book that I couldn't stand to put down and I highly recommend that you all buy and read it as soon as possible!
Banjo is just a queer 16-year-old woman who feels lost navigating life from the security of her home where she lives with her young lesbian mom, her 24-year-old sister, Sam, Sam's 8-year-old son, Henry, and Rags, the dog her soon-to-be baby's father, Gray, left behind the night they killed themselves--just hours after the only time Banjo ever had sex. The narrative is raw and real, and incredibly sweet and sad. When Banjo has a break from reality, her three-day stint in a psych ward nets her two queer friends, who become added supports as she muddles through her pregnancy trying to decide whether or not to raise her daughter, Gracie, when she arrives. I cried enough reading this that my nose is now chapped, but I'll still recommend it to other readers because Banjo is real and loveable, so give her a chance.
Beautiful, devastating, inspiring, heartbreaking... this is the most real YA book about queer youth I've ever read. The language rings true, and the teen characters aren't written in that falsely hip, out of touch adult voice that most YA books fall into. The observations sound like things my kids and their friends talk about (the part about the mom buying only natural soaps and deodorant after she comes out killed me). A book that realistically portrays teen pregnancy without sugar coating OR making it out to be a tragedy is a rare thing. 10/10 buy for the young people in your life!
This book is the first I have ever read to include a queer teen mama as a main character-- or as any character at all, really! This important work shows teen parents in their true form, as whole people with a full range of emotions, dramas, family issues, and an entire life going on. Packebush does an amazing job weaving the story of Banjo, a teenager who finds herself unexpectedly pregnant, along with her family and her new friends that she meets in the mental ward where Banjo spends the first days of the book's timeline.After being released from the ward, Banjo goes home to her mom and her adult sister and her young nephew, where she must navigate her grief, her family's intricate storyline, and her own decision of whether she will keep the baby or give it up for adoption to a married queer couple. Her partner, who commits suicide before the book begins, was Transgender, as is another key character in the story.I applaud Ms. Packebush for not only telling the story of a queer teen, but also for her inclusion of Trans/non-binary teen characters. I cannot stress enough the importance of LGBTQ teens seeing themselves reflected in literature. The story is extremely well-written and the characters shine as full people, not one-dimensional at all. The flashbacks to Grey and Banjo's scenes before Grey's death are written with grace and aplomb as well, which is not an easy task (to interweave a non-chronoligical timeline into a story.)Overall I would definitely recommend this book, although there are a few minor typos in the edition I read, I am sure those will be fixed in the next edition! This book is good for teens, parents of teens, teen parents, queer teens, and parents of kids who are queer/trans/or questioning.
