I had owned a previous edition of this book (the 2nd edition) and found this edition to be greatly improved on an already great book.I appreciate the detail the book gives and as I stated is a great resource.This book is not for the average "lay" person but for the medical professional, it works extremely well and again, does a great job with the detail. I've worked in the ICU for 24 yrs now and this is by far the best ICU resource out there.
Please keep in mind that I am a newer grad and have been working in the ICU for just over 9 months. This is a really great book with A LOT of wonderful information. It goes in depth and with that being said some chapters take me longer to read and really understand (having to look up word and processes I forgot or are unfamiliar with) than others. Most of the time it has adequate information in whatever I want to look up, last time it was hypothermia after cardiac arrest. Also, I have seen a couple resident docs carry around this book as well and other nurses have said it's a great book too. The couple chapters I have read have already taught me a whole hell of a lot.
I LOVE this book. There are a few books you read in medical school that you have difficulty putting down. This book reads so well and covers information in a way that satisfies the new and experienced intensivist. I was fearful of my ICU rotation but left having such an appreciation for the field. It's a big book so don't expect to get through all of it on a busy ICU rotation unless you're super dedicatedThe paper quality is good and the illustrations and images really improve understanding. If you enjoy understanding why we do the things we do go grab this book- it will plug holes in your knowledge gaps
I am a fourth year med student who bought this for my first critical care rotation. I read almostthe entire book on rotation, and really felt that it prepared me well for the questions asked byattendings. I will keep this through residency.
Very informative! It is part of my ICU RN library and it is frequently referenced when I don't understand something, or when I need to figure out how to explain a result, procedure, or piece of equipment to a patient (those things are simply written, in other words).
The e-book also works on Android now! The Android Inkling app is pretty spiffy, makes the book easy to navigate!This book has been an old friend and a light in a dark, scary, and often confusing place. Glad to have my own copy now! It works best when you read it and not just sit it on the shelf. This is actually the sort of book that is enjoyable to read, despite it being about a topic that intimidates.
This book, though 1000 pages, is very readable due to the sensible and often humorous syntheses of the medical literature by a single author. There is an emphasis on practical knowledge. Highly recommended to residents; I wish I had read this during med school.
Great book and actually a really fun read. It made me look like a genius probably a dozen times during my ICU rotation. It does a great review of both the practical parts of ICU but also the underlying physiology that drives a lot of decisions treatments.
