About the Author
Matthew Palmer is one of the Society for all Artists' most renowned demonstrators, and his classes are particularly popular with beginners. He has been painting seriously for twenty years and specialises in landscapes, still life and animals. He has his own studio at his home in Derbyshire and teaches over 150 people per week, as well as running watercolour workshops and holidays. Excellent book!I've purchased several technique books on landscapes and have always wound up with murky detail scapes instead.I saw this at a book store and finally made the decision to buy because of the 6 "projects" included in the book. These are towards the back half and include outlines PLUS pictured step by step breakdowns with about 30 steps each!I tried one of the more detailed exercises on trees tonight and was very pleased with the result compared to others I have done that wound up trashed! (See attached picture)Another thing I really appreciated was throughout the exercise it had instructions on brush sizes and paint %'s. Quite a few other books show you this in the beginning and then you are forced to go find how to make colors X, Y, and Z or look at pictures (sometimes not always on a step) for the brush types.All in all Mr. Palmer breaks down technique in a digestible form for beginners and I can't wait to learn more!
This is an excellent tutorial for the beginner. The beginning has explanations with short exercises. As you progress, you build on the short exercises and create your own masterpieces. They won't look like the author's but they will impress your family and friends and build your own confidence. I finally succeeded in painting water that looked like a lake or waves breaking. My trees improved from clumps of nothingness to real trees.
This is by far the best instructional water coloring book I own. Basic concepts of drawing are presented in a clear, step by step method. The chapters on selecting colors are easy to understand and the author provides illustrations of how to apply color choices to actual objects and various scenes, such as trees,houses by the sea, various landscapes, snow scenes, color suggestions for human figures, etc. I highly recommend this book for the beginning water color artist.
My sister-in-law and I decided to get together once a week to teach ourselves watercolor painting. I bought this book, among others, for reference and we practiced the techniques taught. We later took a 4-day watercolor class and were surprised and pleased that we knew some of the terminology and techniques already. Great book for painters of any level, I think. Have fun. This is a very good book for the watercolor beginner. Not only is there a good introduction to the art of watercolor, the book also gives very good instruction on perspective, light and shade and color. There are very good and easy to follow instruction for techniques that include step by step instruction with exercises to help you learn the technique. Also, includes outline drawings with step by step instructions for full size paintings. I wish I had this book a year ago when I started learning water color. This is a great book for the beginner and will be a big part of my painting for years to come.
Sorry, but I can't wait to rate this until I finish. The content is fast in this wonderful book. This book is filled with tiny tutorials at the beginning. Although I'm not yet past these tutorials, I've already learned many new things about both watercolor and drawing. I've been a beginner for a very long time. A bit of diligence with this book will take me to the next level. Thanks to the author/artist.
I consider myself a beginner in watercolor, only painting a year. I've purchased or loaned library books to learn all I can. Mr. Palmer's youtube video of a gray mountain and trees inspired me to buy this book. It was affordable, and the best part is that he included tear-out sketches at the back if one wanted to trace them rather than sketching by hand (which I prefer). I take no issue with the quality of the book, but if you're extremely new to watercolor painting, this may not be for you. I thought I'd learned a lot this past year, and yet I struggled to understand a lot of what he suggests, assumes, beginners would know. One painting had 30+ steps! The paint dried before I had a chance to incorporate the next step,--softening edges. I guess I'm a fan of the old masters, and this book was too "weekend hobbyist" for me, (no offense) and still I struggled. Decent price for all of the info within, and I do think it's a terrific book, best suited for those who know a lot of the "inside stuff" of watercolor, unlike myself.
Beautifully written and illustrated book that can be used for beginners up to those who have a more advanced skill level. Full sized pull out template sheets are included to help you set up your drawings. Worth the money and would recommend to anyone starting out or refreshing their skills.
