I do truly love The Sweet Potato Queen. This particular book, while tongue-in-cheek, has some real wisdom peppered in, and I purchase this book for all my friends who are going through or have gone through a divorce (probably should for any bride-to-bes, too). The concept seems a little irreverent, with both the wedding advice and divorce advice in the same book, but anyone going through a divorce already has enough heaviness about the topic weighing on their soul. No one ever walked down the aisle thinking, "This is gonna end terribly!". Women in particular just have so much guilt about it all, and let's face it--getting a divorce is embarrassing. It's saying to the public, "WHOOOPS. MY BAD." It's a huge backtracking, for most of us, and it's so awkward to explain. And slinking around in shame is exhausting. My father used to say, "Humor is a good way to get at the truth." The personal stories in here and advice are actually really reassuring and helped me so much during those early wobbly days. Just having some explosive laughter helps, and having someone --even a total stranger-- say, 'Hey I believe you. Your reasons are good enough,' is just really uplifting. Her story of meeting and marrying her second husband is quite wonderful, and while her life certainly hasn't been perfect, she provides some real comfort (and all-out belly laughs) with this book, and I just appreciate it so much.The recipes are killer, too.
I love the Sweet Potato Queen's books. Jill Conner Browne's writing is laugh out loud funny and can also be poignant. Her take on love, life, the South, dating, parenthood, marriage and divorce is certainly unique and enjoyable. Plus, the recipes are to die for (literally, they have so much fat...but seriously, good to make a vat of and share!!!)
I bought this book and read it to a friend going through a nasty divorce. Not only did she laugh, she said absolutely every word rang true. The wedding planner half is silly fun with a few good ideas thrown in, but any woman who's had to kick out a Man Who Needs Killing will relish the divorce guide and all its wicked humor.

They are hilarious! My kind words f women
As in all of her books, Jill Conner Browne is hilarious. I listended to this cd while commuting, and was laughing out loud while driving. There are some very touching moments, but most of this book will keep you laughing. The SPQ's make me think of the Red Hatters - just younger, with alcohol and an attitude. Loved it. Check her other books as well.
