Never enamored with ancient (dull) history, in my senior years, I've enjoyed learning some history through historical fiction. Last year I watched the Tudors long-awaited and had my first real introduction to Henry VIII and his saucy temptress, Anne Boleyn. Robin Maxwell's book about Queen Elizabeth discovering Anne's secret diary, learning about her mother in her mother's own words, was enlightening. Back in those days when men ruled and women were only playthings and incubators for sons, Anne like Henry's first wife Katherine, was only able to give live birth to a single daughter, Elizabeth, who was swept away to be raised by wet nurses and nannies. (Princess Diana was the first British royalty to be involved with the day-to-day raising of her children.) Elizabeth chose to remain single so as to retain the duties, responsibilities and decision-making of a Queen instead of fabricating those to a husband who would then be King. The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars was the 6 years that Anne taunted Henry could have been condensed.

I recommend this book be used as an introductory book for those who claim history is boring. This is a very entertaining presentation of a "historical possibility". A person MIGHT have left behind a diary for a daughter. And predicted that the daughter would become Queen of England. The comparisons between Anne and Elizabeth I should spur my students to read several books to try to sort out some of the historical and social issues presented here. That is why this book is historical fiction. The story races along with lots of facts, but also a lot of things that might have been. I felt like I was reading a tabloid.I detected a theme about 2/3 of the way through the book that was a sort of whining and bemoaning the fate and role of women during King Henry's time. My anti-political correctness radar kicked in and I was distracted from that point to the end of the book. Because it is historical fiction, I do not assume that Anne's thoughts in her last days were on the repression of females in society. That would be inconsistent with the beginning of the book. Anne spent time in the French Court where she had an awareness of the "seamier" side of life. To get more details, she goes to sister Mary, mistress of King Henry, and asks "Just what is it you do to keep a man's attention"?. Although she does not get an explicit answer, she figures out that by teasing the King and hinting at possibilities she can improve her situation in life. Her family will prosper as well. After six years of restraint, followed by three years of marriage, we read that Anne seems to use sex very well as a weapon. Not well enough to produce an heir; that is what leads to her demise. (Note: Can historical fiction have a spoiler?)I can see that a person sitting in prison awaiting an assured execution might write on the great societal injustices of the age. Rationalization seems slight comfort. But this is a diary written over a long period of time. For me, there was an inconsistency between the earlier Anne's ambitious manipulation and the reasons she gives for later persecution. So I suspected author bias. And in my stated anti-PC position, I reveal my bias.Which still made it an interesting read.

I enjoy reading about the life of Anne Boleyn. This book was a little different. The perspective is entirely from Anne. The diary of Queen Anne is delivered shortly after Queen Elizabeth is crowned. It's really interesting to see historical events from what may have been Anne's point of view. In this book I was also fascinated by the description of why Elizabeth decided not to marry. However, I will point out that there were several typographical errors in the last chapter. This was very distracting. Over all very good read. If you enjoy historical fiction, you enjoy this book.

I gravitate toward fiction written about this time period and am particularly drawn toward the court and people who surroundedHenry VII. That being said, it was quite natural that I would chose this book. This story is written as if his daughter (now Queen Elizabeth) is reading her mother's words written in a secret diary. She obtains the diary from Anne's fool who was trusted with the safe-keeping and delivery of the precious volume. Portions of the diary are written as messages to Elizabeth. Elizabeth reads the diary in secret as well, not wishing to share it with even her closest companions. You know how Anne Boelyn's life ends, but keep reading any way. Robin Maxwell is a masterful storyteller. She draws you in at the very beginning and keeps you there until the very end.

I am up for all things Tudor, and this fills the bill nicely. Elizabeth has been queen for just a few months, and an old retainer of her mother gives her a secret diary that Anne Boleyn kept throughout her life. Elizabeth learns many things about her mother that she was never told. The interplay between the "present" of Elizabeth's life and the "past" of her mother's life are successfully intertwined and work very well as a whole. I recommend this book.

I didn't know much about Ann Boleyn, so it was nice to get her account of things. I don't recall if this is fictional because it felt very real! I did wonder how the writer knew so much of what her daughter (the queen) was doing, but I enjoyed it and recommend it.

What a fun read! We all know the story of Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth I but this took a different turn with the fictional discovery of a personal diary written by Anne throughout her exciting lifetime. I felt that it stayed close enough to the facts while providing an interesting backup of the possible emotions and motivations behind the real story. Great job...I had a wonderful time reading it!
