About the Author
Dr. James Zarrillo is Professor Emeritus in the College of Education and Allied Studies (CEAS) at California State University, East Bay. Earlier, Dr. Zarrillo was the Associate Dean of CEAS and Chair of the Department of Teacher Education. Previously, he was a member of the faculty at California State University, Long Beach and an elementary school teacher in Burbank, California. In addition to Ready for RICA, Dr. Zarrillo is author of Teaching Elementary Social Studies: Principles and Applications (Fourth Edition, Pearson, 2012); Teaching Reading with Children’s Literature (co-authored with Carole Cox, Macmillan, 1993); and Multicultural Literature, Multicultural Teaching (Harcourt Brace, 1994).

I took the RICA two times. The first time, I only used the Cliff's Notes study guide since I passed the CSET the first time studying that version of it. Two days before taking the RICA I went to a study session conducted by a professor at my campus. She saw the Cliff's Notes, asked if I had Zarillo's study guide (uh, no), and said I wouldn't pass without it. Harsh, but true. I was 24 points away from passing. Study session round two (another 2 months of studying) I purchased this book. Zarillo organized each compentency, filled each with essential knowledge and strategies, and provided a sample with strategies of how to write/ORGANIZE those tedious essays, especially the fifth essay. I also watched every video even though I thought they would be super boring. They actually weren't. Instead, they were short, to the point and helped the visual learner side of me A LOT. I didn't give up on the Cliff's Notes study guide because I used it as a supplement to quiz myself repeatedly while studying the Zarillo book. Needless to say, I PASSED!!! Biggest piece of advice is to head/title each part of the fifth essay, just as Zarillo demonstrates. Minor piece of advice, purchase "Beating Them All [...]" by Chris Boosalis if you're having trouble with recorded readings, or need extra info. He also is all over YouTube explaining each party of his book. This author also helped me pass.
I am only giving this product two stars because based upon my previous experience in trying to pass the RICA, I tragically discovered that the author is only right about a few things. For example, the author is right as it pertains to Domain 1, but that is it.I'm very dissatisfied and disappointed with using this book as preparation for the RICA for two reasons. First,the author is not clear in some of his instructions for instructional strategies and/or activities. In fact, I discovered that many of the so called strategies that he suggested is what caused the CTC to take away twenty four points from my exam!When it comes to writing your own activities or strategies (for the written response and the Case Study) the CTC wants your very own strategies or activity, not something that is copied from some RICA test prep book like this.I am writing this review as a warning to people who are trying to take and pass the RICA. Sadly, I wasted a lot of time relying upon some of the strategies or unclear activities that Zarillo suggested.So if you are like me, please don't rely upon Zarillo and his limited information to pass the RICA. This test prep book may work for some people, but following what he said, I have to reregister and retest for the fourth time!Just remember that for the writing section and Case Study, your ideas are your own, not Zarillo's!Good luck everyone:-D
I only studied from this book and I passed the exam the first time. The instructional strategies and activities are straight to the point. Pearson makes the test for the Rica and this book is published by Pearson... Good luck!
Great book overall! I wish it had some practice tests. It also bothered me just a bit that there were a few typos on numerous pages. This book includes online videos too which is awesome for studying. I would say get the RICA Cliffnotes book for extra practice tests and info not in this book, and the Case Studies in Prep for the CA Reading Competency Test by Rossi and Schipper for extra practice for case studies. This book is the BEST for reading instruction strategies. The others give you more practice to actually prepare for the RICA. I like the format of this book because it gives you pages that explain what you should study for 10 days before the exam, multiple reading instruction strategies, and assessment options. I do not think this should be the only book you should use to study.
This was my #1 go to book. Then used teachers test prep videos (got discount from school). Cliff notes #3. I think I used this the most from those 3. I failed the test twice before passing. The test is hard so don't think you can go in 1-2 weeks studying and you'll pass. You will pass, don't waste your time stressing and spend more Time studying .
I think this is a very helpful book for an overview. I'm studying with this and one book that focuses just specifically on writing the case study component of the exam, and I think they are both going to be very good things to have prepped with.
Funny, thing: I got the email with my RICA results within minutes of the email from Amazon asking me to review this book. Since I PASSED(!), I thought it only appropriate to give credit to the book. The book definitely helped with preparing me for the RICA. The material was very well organized and provided great support with how to answer the questions. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone preparing for the RICA.
This book is great for anyone who needs to take the RICA exam. Everything is broken down into sections. I also bought a study guide for the RICA but this is a great start. It has been helpful so far as I study for the exam.
