About the Author

Sue Whitney is the founder of JUNKMARKET as well as The American Junk Club, an online community for junkers only. She is the co-author of Decorating JUNKMARKET Style and Junk Beautiful: Room by Room Makeovers with JUNKMARKET Style. Whitney lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Kimberly Melamed earned a degree in journalism and communications from Arizona State University and studied interior design at The Art Institutes International. She lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota.   Hockey-moms-turned-business-partners Ki Nassauer and Sue Whitney scour salvage yards, city clean-ups, and even abandoned grocery stores and bowling alleys looking for trash to rejuvenate into striking home decor. The rubbish renovators operate JUNKMARKET, their workshop and warehouse where they also conduct occasional but wildly popular sales of vintage furniture and their own one-of-a-kind junk creations of furniture and whimsical accessories. In 2004, the JUNKMARKET girls debuted a new gift line in Target Stores. Popularity has spurred a column for "Country Home" magazine, and Nassauer and Whitney also appear on national and regional television shows. In addition, they offer junking seminars for avid followers (their mailing list has grown to 18,000) who are inspired by eclectic tastes from the junking underworld.

I have enjoyed Sue Whitney's previous books and own her Junk Beautiful interiors book. I love those books -- such inspiration and wonderful practical ideas to create a truly personalized one of kind home.I'm prepared to be roasted, given the affection Sue Whitney enjoys by so many, but I have to give my honest opinion about this most recent publication. I was a little disappointed. I'm not sure if it's the photography or what it is, but some of the stuff just looks JUNKY and not very beautiful or cool. Some of the ideas seemed a little silly -- like the old bottles sticking of of pegs on a post on p. 34. There are so many more wonderful ways to use pretty bottles outdoors, but this just looks cheesy. The chuck wagon cookout idea on pages 101 forward was a waste of space. Ugly, tacky. That said, Sue shows her true genius in many profiles. She has a real gift for lighting. The egg carrier chandelier on p. 55 is fantastic. The hanging bed on p. 132 is very cool. Some of her best ideas are the simplest: the stool turned upside down and topped with a glass top to make a table on p. 162 is an easy, quick idea that anybody could do in a second.

Junk Beautiful , Outdoor Edition was just the resource I needed as I was cleaning out closets and trying to decide what to keep for future projects and what to give away. I enjoy crafting projects around the home, and especially for my outdoor room. The lighting projects with jars, and other finds were delightful! If you enjoy going to garage sales or flea markets to find outdoor accent items, then this book will help you see the possibilities of repurposing many everyday items in a fun way!

The pictures and directions for projects are nice. However, for my tastes it was just ok. I think that you can find way more creative ideas for free on Pinterest. This book was not anything special for me and didn't move me in anyway where I would recommend buying this to keep on hand. For the next person it may be worth the money.

I really like this one. "Junk" that has a beauty of it's own, interspersed with other décor, giving the rooms a real, lived-in feel, not like some of the staged rooms seen in decorating books. I would feel good in any room of this book.

I really like the creativity that Sue and Ki have when coming up with uses for junk and design for rooms. They are an awesome team. I wish they would come to my house and use their magic on all my junk. This book seemed to have more "industrial" junk than what I usually see available. Old hospital gurneys seem to be a dime a dozen where these gals live. I have never seen one for sale anywhere, and I have shopped a lot. I hope they keep making books.

First let me say that I purchased this book and the Junk Beautiful book at the same time. I chose to read the Outdoor edition first because it's spring and I'm looking for inspiration to makeover my outdoor areas. There were some things I loved (At The Lake) and some things I hated (Sugar 'n Spice). I have to agree with another reviewer, some of these spaces just look like junk. I personally found a lot of the spaces to be cluttered and I think if a lot of these 'rooms' were pared back they could have been sensational. What I do not understand is the proud display of rust. Rusted bed frame, rusted chairs, rusted outdoor decor. Have they never heard of a wire brush and can of spray paint? I wanted a tetanus shot just looking at some of the pictures! Vinyl chairs (p.120 & p.124) sitting in the sun? Hmmm...I'm thinking leg burns. At the back of the book there is a very limited selection of items that they provide instructions on how to make but strangely enough the coolest thing in this book (p.52 images of friends/family fire-baked onto bricks) wasn't included in that list. I've never seen anything like that before and it's totally unique. What really got me though is the poor, tacky photo captions. 'Dougie fell off his pink scooter and went boom!' is the caption next to a picture of a man laying face down. 'Implement an outmoded fire extinguisher as a candleholder and smother your fear of the flame.' Ugh... they're just awful. Trying so hard to be cutesy just came off as annoying and that's why I gave this book 3 stars. I can see the beauty in the things they created and how to rectify the things that didn't work so well but there is just no excuse for the tacky terminology.

This book has good pictures and good ideas. The ideas are fun & creative and in general I like these Junk Beautiful/Junkmarket style series of books. There are many ideas that have been seen before, but there are a lot of new ideas as well. There is also a lot of good advice on where & how to find supplies. This book is written well and isn't dull or boring.

Just an OK compilation of outdoor decorating ideas using found or reclaimed junk. I was disappointed in the creativity. Nothing really surprised me. If you are a total newcomer to re-purposing, maybe you will like it. Could make a good gift book.
